Perfect for a hot dry situation, Achillea millefolium "Peach" is a lovely soft, peach shade that deepens to a soft vintagey rose pink. You simply cant go past Achilleas in a cottage garden, naturalistic and wildflower garden, but they look equally stunning in your perennial border. Florists love this flower given the mosaic of colours in one flower as well as its longevity in a vase. Full sun will give you the best blooms from late Summer right through into autumn. Loved by bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. After the first flowering, you can shear the plant back to encourage new growth and flowers. Plants are easily split, this can really be done at any time but be sure to keep them moist until established.

Verbascum “Southern Charm” is a uniquely coloured perennial with graceful spikes of flowers in pastel shades of buff, soft lavender and peach with a fuzzy purple eye or bee. The flower colours can be quite variable and some can be deep mauve in colour and not always peachy but they are so beautiful you won't mind, you can see the variation in the first photo in our gardens at Puriri Lane with the darker shade in the background.

See our Instagram page @puriri_lane for more pictures of this stunning flower. Deadheading will encourage re-blooming. The perfect background plat with elegant flower stalks that rise from a rosette of woolly green leaves. Will self-sow if happy. Whilst, not the best cut flower, they still look very pretty popped in with other flowers in an arrangement. Verbascum prefers a sunny well drained position and copes with dry soil. Flowers from mid-spring through summer.

If you love dark coloured flowers then you won't want to be without this one! This beautiful Aquilegia was actually bred for the cut flower production and with its fully double upward-facing flowers it is a stunner. As a cut flower, it can last up to 10 days in a vase so you if love to have fresh flowers in the house then you need this lovely plant.

The flowers are spurless and almost like a little pompom and it flowers profusely from spring. It grows in a bushy upright clump that performs well in full sun to partial shade with average moisture levels. A covering of mulch will help to retain the moisture levels that it enjoys particularly in drier summer months. It is easy to grow and looks at home in garden beds, pots, shade gardens and of course cottage gardens.

Cut back after flowering to encourage a flush of new leaves. Cutting the flowers will encourage more flower stems or leave to set seed. Also known as a Columbine or Granny's Bonnet and Clematis flowered Granny's Bonnet.

A simply stunning coloured Foxglove with soft peachy apricot tubular blooms delicately spotted with yellow cream markings in the throat.

Foxgloves prefers well drained fertile soil but are tolerant of most conditions. Site in partial shade - Foxgloves do like some sun. The Dalmation series of foxgloves flower in their first year so no need to have to wait for this gorgeous plant to flower.

An excellent cut flower and one that is heavily favoured by flower farmers and florists. The trick to getting the longest vase life from foxglove is to cut the stems before the bees get to them! When the flowers are pollinated, they drop from the stems, so be sure to pick them early when just a few flowers are open. Expect a vase life of 6-8 days if flower preservative is used- see our blog post about extending the life of your cut flowers here. An excellent addition to bouquets and wedding work, this salmony beauty is a must-have in any cutting garden. While most foxgloves are biennials, this new hybrid flowers the first year from an early sowing of seed and will also produce the second year if left in place.

Also known as Pin Cushion Flower and Sweet Scabious, Scabiosa "Black Knight" has beautiful dark maroon almost black flowers that are cottage garden favourites. The new flowers before opening look like black jubes, you can see one in the background of the photograph. Loved by both bees and butterflies, Black Knight has fragrant blooms and a long vase life, even the buds before they open look great cut and mixed with the open flowers.

An easy, low maintenance cut and come again cut-flower with long wiry stems. Cutting or deadheading often will extend flowering into late autumn. Birds love the dried seed heads that appear after flowering right through into winter so we leave our seedheads on, and also think bunches of seed heads look great in a vase. Will self-sow. Happiest in sun but will cope with a little bit of shade.

Chrysanthemum | Peach

In the autumn garden, Chrysanthemums are a star performer that bloom prolifically long after other plants have called it quits for the season. A native of China and prized for over 2,000 years, the name “chrysanthemum” comes from the Greek words for gold (chrysos) and flower (anthos) and is often affectionately shortened to “mum.” These are plants that you do not tend to find a lot of these days but they are becoming extremely popular all over again and really are a flower from yesteryear.

This coloured variety is divine and is a beautiful peach colour. Chrysanthemums are back in fashion and this one is no exception! Chrysanthemums need at least 5 to 6 hours of sun daily to perform at their best. They are prone to powdery mildew so need to have good air circulation, the morning sun is needed to dry the dew on the leaves and in addition to this, they need good drainage. The plants are actually pretty tough but do benefit from a light and frequent feeding with a balanced fertiliser during their period of growth which is autumn.

When plants are about 15cm tall, pinch off the tips to encourage bushiness which will, in turn, encourage more flowers. Pinch back again when plants reach 30cm. Some gardeners pinch back every few weeks until January to encourage heavy autumn flowering. The last pinching out should be about 100 days before the desired bloom time if you are growing for an event.

After flowering, some gardeners cut them back to about 10cm tall and cover with a light, airy mulch or straw although this is not actually necessary but can tidy the plants up. Chrysanthemums can also be easily divided.

A fabulous cut flower that lasts so well in a vase, often for more than two weeks. Pick them when they two thirds to three-quarters open, be sure to strip all of the leaves off so they do not sit under the waterline.

This is a new variety of Foxglove bred to have an exceptionally long flowering period. The plants are actually sterile so it flowers for many weeks, beginning in late spring and into midsummer.

Polka Dot Polly forms an attractive low rosette of dark green leaves, with tall stems that stand erect with spikes of well branched spikes with flowers crowding the stem. The flowers are an intriguing deep rose and apricot mix with a soft primrose yellow lip.

Given the longevity of the flowers they are excellent candidates for the cutting garden. A very attractive variety that is a great choice for the middle to back of a sunny border and can even be used in a large pot.

Plants like a well drained positioned in a sunny spot but will cope with afternoon shade.

Cistus salvifolius | Prostratus also know as Sageleaf Rockrose is an evergreen low spreading shrub with beautiful white flowers adorned with golden yellow stamens and a yellow spot at the base of the flower - the flowers are approximately 3.5cm in diameter.

The flowers only last for a day but this vigorous shrub will provide you with a succession of flowers right through from late spring right into early to mid summer. The flowers are borne atop a dense mound of attractive wrinkled grey green foliage which do resemble sage leaves - hence the common name Sageleaf Rockrose.

This plant is an excellent choice as both a groundcover for sloping areas, rock walls or rough situations. Also a lovely choice for cottage gardens and city gardens for a lovely crisp clean green and white look.

It is easily grown in well drained soils and appreciates a full sun position. Plants are evergreen and can be grown in both poor soil and will also tolerate coastal conditions. Once established they are also drought tolerant, but a layer of mulch will help to keep in the moisture.

Height up between 40-60cm and spreading ultimately up to 1.8-2.4m although can easily be kept in check by trimming.

Also known as White Lace Flower this little annual will happily self-sow and adds an airiness to summer gardens with its large flat umbels that can reach up to 12cm in width.

Orlaya is a great plant to attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. Perfect for a cutting garden Orlaya' s elegant flowers can last up to ten days in a vase, just make sure when you cut it that you cut the stems on an angle so that they don't sit on the bottom of the vase but also have a bucket of water to the ready so as you cut them, you can immediately put them into water as this helps them to last longer. Also be sure to cut in the cool of the day rather than in the heat of the day which applies to all flowers that you are using for cutting.

Looks fabulous with Iris Sibirica "Caesar's Brother" which is how we have used it in our garden which you will also find on our website in Spring.

Performs best in full sun but can tolerate light shade..

Papaver paeoniflorum | White Cloud

Papaver paeoniflorum White Cloud is an easy-to-grow plant with billowing almost cloud-like double white fluffy flowers, with beautiful crinkled petals.

These plants are such showstoppers when they're in full bloom and will add a bit of architecture to your garden.

Peony poppies send up thick flower stems that rise above their lettuce leaf like basal leaves and can produce as many as ten nodding flower heads. When the flowers do burst, overnight, from their casings into this beautiful flower, they are then followed with the instantly recognisable Poppy seed head once the petals have dropped.

These plants grow quickly and the first flowers appear in early December. The light green, pods are well-suited to floral arrangements and for drying. This annual variety will readily self-sow, so you will always have these stunning flowers popping up in the garden for years to come.

As poppies resent disturbance, we recommend cutting and removing the plant from the bag without disturbing the root ball and put it into the prepare hole and firm into position. Poppies like a well-drained spot in full sun but you can also successfully grow them in pots. Ensure that the plants are well watered to ensure that you maximise their flowering potential.

Poppies like manure, compost or bone meal ahead of planting, or you can use any organic fertiliser rich in nitrogen. Although these are hungry little feeders their dramatic flower show will be more than worth the care that you give them.

Chrysanthemum | Perfect Accent

Chrysanthemum Perfect Accent is white and very elegant and is a fantasy/spider type with flowers up to 12 cm if grown as a disbud, plants to 1.5 meters if correctly pruned, autumn flowering.

To disbud is the process of removing surplus buds on the stem of the plant as they appear so that the plant can put all of its energy into producing one rather than many flowers. Disbud plants to produce 2-3 exhibition sized blooms or you can simply allow sprays to develop.

Long vase life. Has large leaves and has a vigorous growth habit. Autumn flowering under decreasing day length.

Chrysanthemums need at least 5 to 6 hours of sun daily to perform at their best. They are prone to powdery mildew so need to have good air circulation, the morning sun is needed to dry the dew on the leaves and in addition to this, they need good drainage. The plants are actually pretty tough but do benefit from a light and frequent feeding with a balanced fertiliser during their period of growth which is autumn.

Malva moschata | Alba

Malva moschata f. alba also known as a White Musk Mallow is a very pretty perennial with musk scented white bowl shaped flowers that are about 6cm in diameter. Flowering starts from early summer and here in Drury, we have even had it flowering into mid winter when the winters are mild. The attractive deeply divide foliage provides a flattering backdrop for the ice white flowers. If you are creating a cottage garden or wildflower garden then this plant is a must. Removing spent flowers will encourage continued blooming. Ours self sow as they obviously like their spot in the garden and we don't mind that at all as you can easily pop a few more of this lovely plant into other areas of your garden.

Plants will perform to their optimum in a full sun position in average well drained soil.

A spectacular bienniel Campanula also known as the Chimney Bellflower as a result of its tall spires of white flowers - it is quite an architectural plant. In its first year Campanula pyramidalis will put on its attractive heart shaped leaf growth and in its second year it will flower and then set seed to ensure that you have a succession of small plants popping up around the parent plant, not unlike what a Foxglove does.

This variety likes a moist but well drained position in a partly shaded area. An excellent cut flower so perfect for the cutting patch or in the border. Flowers from summer through to Autumn.

Scabiosa caucasica | Fama White

Scabiosa caucasica "Fama White" is the most beautiful perennial scabiosa. With long stems and pure white flowers that rise high above the mounds of dense lance-shaped leaves to create a waft of intense lilac-blue flowers each with a silvery pincushion centre. These stunning flowers can reach up to 10cm wide.

This plant is adored by flower arrangers, and they are considered to be the best strain for cutting.

Whilst this scabiosa is relatively easy to grow and they are they super hardy to below -18°C not that we get that here, but the biggest trick to success with this plant is excellent drainage.
Scabiosa flower profusely the more they are cut and throughout the whole summer, and last well into autumn. They are a favourite of both bees and butterflies.
