perfect for pollinators

Centaurea macrocephala is magnificent perennial that is actually a member of the thistle family.  It has beautiful bright yellow shaggy flowers that are held on tall stems that will make a strong vertical statement positioned towards the back of your border. Beneficial insects, bees, and birds all love this flower.

This is also definitely for the Flower Farmer out there, as freshly cut blooms will last up to 5 days. Cut the flowers early in the morning when they are half open be sure to strip the lower leaves from the stems. They also make a wonderful dried flower, but the process for achieving this is a little different.  If you want to dry them, harvest the flowers in the late morning or in the afternoon. Select flowers that have only just opened or you will find that they will drop their petals once they have dried. Air-dry the flowers by tying them in bunches and hang them upside down in an airy, dark place for a few weeks.

The best results will be if you plant these in a sunny and well-drained position, but be sure to choose well as they resent being moved once they are established.  Flowers mid Summer.
