perfect for pollinators

Whilst this plant may take a little while to get established, Freckles bears scented very pretty open bells that are about 4.5cm in length that are cream on the outside, cream on the inside with tepals that recurve to reveal lots of raspberry coloured ‘freckles’ internally that change to a darker boysenberry colour as they age.  The flowers are slightly scented.

Great also as a cut flower.  The important thing when creating a clematis bouquet, as with all plants, is choosing your flowers. When harvesting your clematis, select blooms that are not fully mature to ensure the longest vase life. The blooms should be about half open and the stamens should be held together and not yet unfolding. Although fully open blooms can also be cut, they will not last as long. When picking for a special event, blooms cut at different stages gives a beautiful, natural look to your arrangement.

The leaves of this stunning evergreen variety are a glossy dark green with deep serrated edges. The underside of the foliage is slightly bronze, as are the new shoots.

These gorgeous bell shaped flowers look beautiful when viewed from below, so it looks great when planted and trained up an arch or arbor or against a wall.  Clematis cirrhosa Freckles is easy to grow and maintain, and will succeed anywhere In the country.  It is not very particular about soil conditions but, prefers a sunny position protected from strong wind. Hardy to frost.

Clematis cirrhosa ‘Freckles’ received the prestigious Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Clematis Freckles rests over the summer and then comes into flower in the winter so is a fantastic nectar source for any winter active bees that may be out and about early due to unusually warmer winter days that we sometimes get, so growing something to provide sustenance for our bees over the winter months is a great thing to be able to do.

We have ours growing at the base of a climbing rose to hide its bare legs and in winter when the rose is dormant, Freckles really shines.  This variety needs little pruning, just a little tidy up after flowering, but don't trim off too much as these plants flower on old wood.
