Aquilegia vulgaris | Magpie
Also known as "Willian Guinness" this stunning Granny's Bonnett or Columbine has nodding flowers on tall slender stems that are a dark maroon/purple in the centre with dark outer petals and spurs. These are a great perennial to have in the garden due to their propensity to self-sow. This unusual variety is an old fashioned flower that looks particularly effective when grown en masse.
Aquilegias prefer dappled shade and whilst their foliage remains attractive throughout the year, the plants certainly benefit from a trim back in late autumn which will encourage lush fresh foliage. Plants tend to cross-pollinate, hybridise and self-seed freely creating new strains and colours, and from experience, you can get some lovely new ones popping up.
Aquilegias also make an ideal cut flower and last well in a vase.
Height: 60-75cm x 30-40cm spread
