Calendula officinalis | Orange Flash
A new variety and one I could not go past with its beautiful peachy tones. Definitely more peachy/buff in colour than the name suggests with the backs of the petals a darker rusty tone. Buds start of a beautiful rusty colour and unfurl into a multi-petalled piece of art with a stunning dark centre.
Petals can be used in salads and flowers are great for picking. Harvest flowers when they are 1/2 way open which you can see in one of our photos. Using flower food or a bit of sugar in the water and you can expect a vase life of around 6-7 days. The foliage is actually quite sticky so you might like to wear gloves when picking them. Plants like a well drained sunny position and are no trouble at all to grow.
Flowering is normally from early summer right through until late autumn and the more you harvest the flowers, the more the plants will produce. Leaving some heads on them will enable the plant to set some seed and you will find them popping up again in your garden, but they are easily removed if you do not want them.
