Centranthus ruber | Albus
Centranthus Ruber | Albus also known as Red Valerian is very popular with its large rounded heads of showy tiny white flowers. The foliage on this plant is a blue-green and the flowers stand atop and are sweetly perfumed.
This border beauty is loved by butterflies. It is a clump forming perennial that reaches around 90cm in height by approximately 60cm wide and it actually thrives in poor soil and can often be found self sown in cracks and crevices. The one thing it does not appreciate is hot and humid summers but we actually grow it here at Puriri Lane where we do get some humidity and have not had any problems with growing it. Full sun and good drainage will give you success with this plant.
Cutting back flowers will encourage additional flowering so it makes a perfect choice as a cut flower in your cutting patch and lasts around ten days in a vase. A lovely choice for a cottage garden as it is a real old time vintage style plant. Also a great choice for coastal gardens.
Centranthus ruber will freely self sow so be sure to cut off the flower heads if you do not want this to happen. This plant actually enjoys one of the longest flowering seasons from early summer right through until the end of autumn
