Cleome hassleriana | Helen Campbell
With its pristine white scented flowers, Cleome hassleriana 'Helen Campbell' is a particularly attractive variety which produces flowers all summer long. Known as the spider flower, long stamens that protrude from the large flowers and the long seed pods, borne later in the season is why this plant is referred to as the spider flower. The RHS has awarded Cleome 'Helen Campbell' the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
It is an easy-to-grow annual that adds colour to the late summer garden when many flowers are beginning to fade. The fluffy clusters of white flowers are wonderful for attracting butterflies. Cleome gives a strong vertical dimension and makes an excellent background plant as you can see from the pictures taken here at Puriri Lane. It is an excellent cut flower and the seed capsules also dry well. They do however have thorns so if you are you using them for cut flowers then our thorn and greenery stripper is just what you need to easily remove them
The plants grow to a height of 80 to120cm high with strong stems, they are completely self-stable and do not need support.
Plants self-sow, so remove the seed capsules if you do not want this to happen.
Plant at the back of the border or they can also look striking massed in a pot.
We also have Cleome spinosa Violet Queen
