Jobs Tears is an ornamental grass which is also known as adlay or adlay millet and has attractive wide green blades that grow upright and arch over at the ends.  The most notable features of this plant are the spikes of grain that are produced at the end of summer.  The grains swell to produce strings of seeds that are in fact used for making rosary beads as well as other jewellery.  The seeds begin as greyish green tear-shaped orbs that when they ripen turn to a rich dark mocha colour.  If harvesting the seeds for jewellery you need to take them when they are green and then leave in a nice dry spot to air dry fully.  Once the seeds have dried they change colour to an ivory, shiny pearly hue.  What a great garden plant that is multipurpose!

Believed to be one of the oldest grasses in cultivation, it was ground into flour or strung for rosaries, necklaces and teething beads and was originally offered in a seed list in 1810!

This plant will self sow in warmer climates so if you do not want this to happen, you will need to remove the seed heads.

Plants enjoy a full sun position and are tolerant of a wide range of soils so can realistically be planted anywhere!
