perfect for pollinators

Cosmos bipinnatus Antiquity is stunning and noted for both the fact that it is early flowering but also for its unique colourings which as it ages become antique looking.  The flowers are a rich crimson to burgundy colour that fade as they age giving you a variety of shades on each stem.  This  variety will have flowers from early summer right through autumn.  This is a "cut and come again" annual so the more you cut the flowers the more you will be rewarded with new ones.  If left to flower without picking your plants will self sow, but who minds with something as pretty as this!

The plant is perfect for garden beds and borders and of course a top pic for the cottage style garden and meadow style plantings and an absolute must for the picking garden.  A favourite of both bees and butterflies.

The individual flowers don't last overly long in a vase at around 4-6 days, but each stem normally has multiple buds that will open over the period of the week.  When harvesting your Cosmos stems, pick them when the flowers are just starting to unfurl as you don't want pollinators doing their work.  By picking early you will lengthen your vase life by an additional few days.  Read up about using our home made floral preservative here or if you want to grow them from seed for your self then this book The Flower Garden is filled with tips and tricks
