This stunning award winning Smokebush is a large deciduous shrub noted for its attractive rounded leaves. In spring the leaves emerge a rich red and then as they mature they develop a deep wine purple colour turning red again in Autumn. In late spring the most beautiful hazy puffs of smokelike flowers appear in a mauvey pink colour that cover the plants. When viewed en masse they appear wispy and smoky as you can see from the below photos which is where this plant gained its common name of Smoketree or Smokebush. These fabulous plants have a long season of interest. The flowers are attractive to butterflies.
Royal Purple grows well in full sun or partial shade . These plants are not fussy about the type of soil that they are in but they do not like soggy wet feet. That said they so like reasonable amounts of moisture, so mulching will help to keep the soil evening moist. The trees are actually quite drought tolerant once established. The best leaf colour is exhibited in full sun. Plants grow with an upright and multiple branching habit.
Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
The lovely mauvey flowers of this tree have become very popular with florists and flower farmers for cutting - you can see a photo of a wreath using the Cotinus flowers and not only does it cut well for floral work, it also dries exceptionally well. Be sure to check out our workshops where we can show you how to make wreathes.
Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to promote the growth of new shoots and also enhance the lovely colouration of the purple leaved varieties such as Royal Purple. Note though that pruning hard will be at the expense of abundant flowering.
