Seduction is a particularly gorgeous Dahlia ( actually I do say this about all of them as they are all so gorgeous!)  that has lavender and white tones with dark undersides. A prolific flowerer the flowers are approximately 12-15cm in diameter.  This variety is a Decorative dahlia which are recognised for their large flowers with soft round florets.

A great choice as both a cut flower as it has an excellent vase life as well as one to showcase in your flower border.  Cutting your Dahlias will keep your plants flowering profusely so you can have armfuls to decorate inside as well as having them on show in your garden. These also look particularly pretty floating in a shallow bowl as a centrepiece on a table.

As with all Dahlias, flowering is best in full sun but a little bit of light shade particularly in hotter areas is always appreciated. This little beauty is a multiple award winner and we can see why.

Dahlias like to have consistent moisture to perform to their best through the growing season so be sure not to let your soil dry out - we mulch our dahlias to ensure that moisture is retained particularly as they are a late summer flowering plant and it is always hot at that time of the year.

Dahlias originally hail from Central and South America and in particular Mexico where they are in fact the national flower. Interestingly it is said that the Aztecs used the tubes as a food crop as well as for medicinal purposes. The botanists back in the 17th century however soon discovered the beauty of the flowers.  There are actually 20,000 Dahlia varieties and interestingly every variety is a descendant from one of the original species such as Dahlia rossea so if you are an addict like I am you are going to need a big garden!!

Dahlias | Preparation

Prepare your garden beds well. Dahlias prefer well-drained, acidic loam but will grow relatively well in any soil as long as it isn’t too wet. Dig down approximately 20-30cm and amend the soil by adding compost to increase the porosity and nutrient density as dahlias are big feeders.

Lay the tuber sprout-side up 7-8cm deep in a trench and cover it over with the prepared soil. Dahlias need to be kept weed-free. Mulch around the plants to prevent weeds and conserve moisture. Pinch back the terminal bud or the primary growing tip when the plant is about 40cm tall to enforce good branching and structure and increase budding. Provide plenty of water to your plants. Water plants deeply once or twice per week. Big dahlias will need a support structure such as mesh which is what we use or corral them in with twine to keep the heavy blooms from bending to the ground.

Plant after your last spring frost.  You can read more about growing Dahlias on our Garden Journal here.

Fertilize monthly with water-soluble fertilizer  - we use Seasol a few times during the growing season.
