Dianthus Barbatus Sweet Black Cherry makes a fabulous cut flower that lasts well in a vase as well as being a wonderful border plant.

Sweet Black Cherry bears multiple, densely packed heads of darkest ruby coloured fragrant flowers, on set against green foliage which looks particularly striking and is also grown by commercial flower growers as it has lots of flowering stems on each plant.

Black Cherry performs best in full sun but will perform equally well in partial shade. Growing to a height of 30 to 40cm with flowers, butterflies and bees go crazy for these flowers. Flowering starts from mid Spring.

Whilst this variety  is considered a short-lived perennial do not worry as it will set seed although it it a hybrid so will not come 100% true to the original plant but by self sowing, it will  ensure that this plant will always be in your garden. It is a beautiful addition to the cottage garden borders, beds and containers. Hardy so does not mind the frost once established.

Dianthus barbatus will potentially last between 14 and 21 days in a vase, sometimes longer if looked after. To ensure you get longevity from Black Cherry, ensure the water is changed frequently. A drop of bleach in the water will help to keep the water smelling sweet as well as stopping it from going cloudy.
Trim the ends of the stem cut above a node at an angle every three days to extend the life of the flower.
If the flower is not fully open, it can be "flicked" open, by lightly flicking the petals from the top of the flower.
