Dianthus caropyllus | Chaubaud Jeanne Dionis
Chabaud Jeanne Dionis is beautiful boasting ruffled white petticoats on strong grey-green stems. Extremely fragrant, this old fashioned carnation flowers all summer long and has been tall stems and an extremely long vase life making them ideal for cutting and one that Erin Benzakein from Floret Flower Farm puts at the top of her list. The flowers are borne in sprays and smell like cloves.
If you are picking them for a vase you should pick them when 1-2 flowers on the spray are open. Making your own flower food will help them last - head on over to the Garden Journal to find our home made recipe that works well for cut flowers and one we use here at Puriri Lane when preparing our flowers for workshops.
Carnations enjoy a sunny position, in well drained soil and of course the more you cut the flowers, the more they will produce.
