Dierama pulcherrium | Rosy Pink
Dierama pulcherrimum which is from the Iris family is a striking cormous perennial that has gracefully arching stems that rise through tufts of grassy foliage and drooping panicles of numerous, delightful, bell-like flowers. Each stem drop bends with the weight of the flowers which earns them the common name of Angel's Fishing Rod.
This is a seedling that has rosy purple flowers. The wonderful arching stems have long lasting seed heads that look fantastic dried or they add beautiful winter interest to the garden. The flowers too are excellent as a cut flower.
Dierama add beautiful movement to the garden and look amazing planted with early flowering autumn grasses or as a specimen plant underplanted with lower ground covers. The perfect choice for both a pot or a gravel garden but equally at home in the border. A lovely choice also for planting beside a pond where the graceful flower stems can hang over the water.
These plants are slow to establish in the garden, but once they are underway they are very tough. They prefer a rich soil but like a well drained position and do appreciate some protection from cold winds. Plants will perform to their best in a sunny position in a fertile, moist, but well-drained, soil, which doesn’t dry out too much in summer or become waterlogged in winter. If you are on a heavier clay soil as we are, we have found that amending the soil by adding well rotted organic matter certainly helps. If you are on a sandier soil you would also need to do the same. Mulching will help in drier areas of the country.
Not overly hardy, these plants will withstand light frosts but is not likely to respond well to soil temperatures below minus 5°C and protection in the form of a thick mulch or cover with frost cloth in very cold areas.
Little care other than cutting back unsightly foliage is required. After some years the flowers will decrease at which time you will need to divide your plants. As the roots are very brittle and they resent the disturbance, you will find that any separated clumps will not flower for a year until they have had time to settle in to their new home. Plant carefully to try and minimise root disturbance
