Euphorbia polychroma is an incredibly long lived and very showy perennial, commonly known as Cushion Spurge.
It is a mounding clumping plant that is considered a must have in your garden border. These plants grown in an attractive dome shape and have flattened golden yellow flowers in mid spring as well as its foliage putting on a wonderful show in autumn. The recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
The flowers whilst not overly showy they are subtended by long lasting bracts which are bright sulphur yellow. Suntended basically means that the bracts support or enfold the flower so the main beauty is really is provided by the bracts which subtend the flowers.
The foliage is a medium green but in autumn they turn shades of red/purple and orange so the plant has a really great season of interest.
It is a full sun lover but will tolerate a lightly shaded position but it thrives in dry well drained soils and even poor soil and rocky sandy positions are more than welcomed by this little plant. The perfect choice for borders, containers and an excellent choice for cottage and mediterranean gardens.
Plants will self seed freely if not dead headed so remove the spent flowers or cut them back by about a third after flowering, this will also encourage nice bushy growth.
All parts of this plant are highly toxic if ingested and the milky sap may cause irritation to both the skin and eyes, so be sure to wear gloves when pruning back.
