perfect for pollinators

Helenium's we believe are an essential part of the late season autumnal garden.  Waltraut is highly prized by gardeners for its extremely long blooming season as well as its outstanding colour.

Waltraut features double shaded flowers that are a beautiful golden colour overlaid with copper orange, brown centres and rusty coloured underside that as they age they change to a very delicate orange.  The stunning central disc is covered with lashings of golden pollen which is adored by butterflies.

This Helenium is a real feast for the eyes.  You will have the kaleidoscope of colours as the flowers delicately age from midsummer through to autumn at a time when other flowers are starting to fade.  As you can imagine this plant looks striking planted en masse and mixes well with ornamental grasses as well as lot of other perennials.  Well suited for borders, cottage gardens as well as the popular meadow style and naturalistic plantings that have become popular. These should also be a first choice for your butterfly garden along with a sprinkling of seed bombs from our Butterfly Seed bombs which you can find here.

An attractive cut flower and even when the petals have fallen the golden discs also add a touch of gorgeous whimsy to your floral work.  The golden discs also look great dried!

A full sun lover,  Heleniums are very hardy but prefer a medium to wet, but well drained soil - mulching will help to retain moisture as they immensely dislike dry soil. They are happy in clay as well as sandy soils.  Regular watering will ensure masses of flowers.  Deadheading will extend the flowering season but once the plants have finished flowering the stems should be cut to the ground.

Plants can be easily divided to give you more plants in the autumn but be sure to let them clump to a reasonable size before you do this.  Dividing will ensure they flower to their maximum potential.

We have other Helenium varieties which you can see here
