perfect for pollinators

Not often seen these days this lovely plant is now a naturalised wildflower over much of North America, Sweet Rocket and Dames Rocket as it is also known originally came from Europe.  Hesperis matronalis violet is a biennial that puts on a low rosette of green leaf growth in the first year, flowers in the second and would normally self sow so you will always have it - self-sown seedlings are easily transplanted in spring or autumn.  A true cottage garden plant but equally at home in a pot of any garden border.

In spring of the second year, the plants will produce an upright branching head of fragrant flowers not dissimilar to Phlox.  An excellent flower for cutting with its long stems and is very attractive to butterflies with its abundant nectar. Also known as Dame’s Rocket, it is often mistaken for Phlox as the flowers are very similar.

Plants grow easily in all soil types including clay and sandy soils. This plant is easy care and is happy in full sun or partial shade.  Mulching will help to retain moisture levels.

We also have  Hesperis matronalis Alba
