Hypocalymma angustifolium - Coconut Ice is a pretty pink flowered myrtle is a small shrub that is actually related to the Tea Tree or Leptospermum as well as Callistemon.
It is a dainty and unusual shrub that flowers in spring but appreciates a sheltered spot away from strong winds. Plants have a weeping habit with aromatic foliage that when bruised is both sweet and spicy. Whilst inconspicuous in the garden when not flowering, the flowers always attract attention when the flowering season begins which is normally around about September.
Likes a lime free soil and should be trimmed to retain a bushy shape.
It often grows in winter-wet sites but also tolerates drought and frost, and grows in a variety of soils including sandy, gravelly, clay loam and is often found growing along side streams, creeks and wetlands in its native Australian home.
An excellent shrub for cutting and lasts up to two weeks in a vase. Stems can also be dried so great for dried floral work, so this is a great plant for flower farmers!
We also have the stunning variegated cultivar Hypocalymma cordifolium | Golden Veil which has striking foliage.
