Iris japonica, also known as wattii | evansia is a very beautiful pale blue crested Iris originating from Asia which has fan-shaped flowers.

They are so-called crested irises because of the ridged area on the tops of their three large petals. Each stem of flowers can bear up to fifty flowers on each stem over a long flowering period of a couple of months. The foliage is shiny green and sword shaped. Iris japonica is an evergreen perennial. We also have this in white which is not commonly seen which you can find here

These plants look superb massed under trees and provide a wonderful groundcover.  They tend to spread reasonably quickly resulting in large clumps.  We find that plants can be easily divided and should have this done to ensure that flowering does not reduce over time.  Easy care they are an excellent choice for the border, in pots and as mentioned as a ground cover under trees which is how we use them.

Whilst we love the look of our iris in the garden, they make spectacular cut flowers in a vase inside and keep for up to 2 weeks.  Here a few handy tips to ensure you get the most out of your indoor iris displays.

  • Keep an eye on iris flowers in your garden, and pick them just as the top flower is starting to unfurl. It’s best to cut them using sharp secateurs early in the morning or in the evening
  • Some people advise recutting your iris at an angle once they are inside, either under a running tap or underwater in a bucket.
  • Display your iris out of direct sunlight and breezes. Change the water every three days or when it becomes murky and recut the stems if necessary.  Pinch off the wilted flowers as the blooms emerge lower down the stem.

Flowering is normally from mid Spring around about October until December.

Not much care is required although some general slow-release fertiliser such as blood or bone at about a handful per square metre in spring is appreciated. Do not use lime on irises as they like the soil to be more acidic.

If planting multiple plants, plant at approximately 60cm spacing.
