Justicea brandegeeana or Shrimp plant as it is also known is a native of Mexico and is a sprawling, suckering tropical evergreen shrub and one that is not normally something that we would grow given that it is tropical, but it's interesting flowers are what caught our eye!
The flowers actually resemble shrimps and the plants flower over a long period from about mid spring to autumn. The lush foliage and interesting flowers make it a natural choice for a tropical garden. It can also be grown in a pot or kept inside for a houseplant or sited anywhere where the interesting flowers can be observed.
As you would expect being such an interesting plant it is the recipient of the Award of GArden Merit from the Horticultural Society. A full sun to part shade lover, the plants enjoy a moist, humusy soil and some partial shade will help to protect the flowers from "bleaching out" in the hot sunlight. Plants should be pinched out to promote a more compact plant and stems can be pruned back before spring when the plant begins to make more growth.
Plants can grow between 40cm and 90cm both tall and wide.
Please note these plants are very brittle and packaging for transit can be tricky. If a piece does snap off in transit, the plants will recover. We just need to make you aware of this as we would prefer not to ship but rather you select "Click & Collect" to pick up your plant so really more suited to our Auckland customers.
