Kolkwitzia amabilis | Pink Cloud
Also known as Beauty Bush this beautifully arching shrub produces profuse clouds of clear pink and white flowers that appear in spring. The flowers are bell-shaped and are followed by capsule-like fruit.
This shrub is easy to grow in soils with average to medium moisture levels but appreciates good drainage. Prefers a partially shaded position. Over time the plants become quite dense so some thinning is required. Plants can be cut to the ground in late winter or immediately after flowering. Plants flower on old wood so if you do choose to cut them down it will result in no flowers for the season but the plants will grow taller during the period of no flowers.
The plant is actually a member of the honeysuckle family and is also closely related to Weigelas as well. This shrub is deciduous but does have bark that exfoliates from its branches which provides some winter interest.
Can be used as a stand-alone specimen or massed to use as hedging. Fast-growing but does sucker.
