Lunaria annua also known as Honesty, Money Plant and Silver Dollar is a fast growing very interesting bienniel plant with its four petalled deep purple flowers which bloom from about mid spring and into early summer.
Flowers are produced in the second year from transplant and after the attractive flowers have finished they are replaced by beautiful green seed pods which as they mature produce parchment coloured seed pods which are highly prized for drying. Upon drying you can remove the outer casement from both sides to reveal the beautiful silvery pods - I have put a picture of the ones that I have done this to in the photos and you can also see them in the garden before they have been cleaned. The green foliage which is produced in the plants first year of growth consists of a clump of medium green heart shaped serrated leaves with points at the tip.
Lunaria attracts butterflies and is resilient to most pests and diseases. A very easy low maintenance plant to grow, it looks great in garden beds, cutting gardens and is a perfect choice for a shaded woodland style garden where it will happily self sow and naturalise. It is also happy to grow in full sun but some respite from the hot afternoon sun is appreciated. It likes a moist but well drained soil and does not like to dry out.
Lunaria annua is the recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
