Also known as the White Turks Cap Lily, Martagon lilies are such a charming lily with their racemes of up to forty pure white flowers with no spots that are about 5cm wide. The flowers face downwards but have strongly recurved petals which resemble a Turks cap which is where they get their common name from. These are excellent flowers for the cutting garden. Martagon lilies only have a very light fragrance. Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Martagon lilies flower from early to mid summer and then come back year after year and make an excellent plant for the border and look exceptionally pretty with annuals and other summer flowering bulbs. They are also an excellent choice for a container.
Growing up to 1.5m in height and sometimes taller their slender stems are clad with whorled leaved. These lilies are highly disease resistant and will perform well in either full sun or partial shade. A good level of moisture is required. For best results, some grit and a generous quantity of leaf mould or other organic material should be mixed through the soil until it is a crumbly open texture. These bulbs can take around a year to adjust to their new spot but once established they thrive for years, and they are worth the wait!
Once the bulb has finished flowering cut bak the stems once they have turned yellow. Bulbs will naturalise. Plants may self sow.
