Papaver orientale | Royal Wedding
In summer this striking perennial poppy has large white satiny blooms with a dark plummy almost black centre. Extremely long-lived this undemanding plant will give you years of spectacular blooms. The flowers can get up to 15cm diameter and look fabulous as a border plant. The older the plant becomes the more profuse the flowering becomes.
Papaver orientale Royal Wedding is happy in most sites and soils and can cope with baking heat, drought and freezing winters. The foliage may die back in the heat of summer but will return in autumn giving you a lovely clump of foliage that will multiply for years so can be easily split. Royal Wedding also makes a great cut flower but they should be picked early in the morning before the new flowers have fully opened, and then sear their stems with a flame and allowed to finish opening in the bouquet - they will last the full day if not moved. The large seedheads can, however, be taken and dried and used for floral arranging. A great choice for a cottage garden/informal gardens, flower borders and of course floral arrangements.
