Phlox paniculata | Vintage Wine
A not often seen dark-leaved variety with sweetly scented royal purple cerise flowers. Phlox paniculata Vintage Wine has a long flowering season and its striking rich coloured heads and dark foliage make this plant a must-have in the summer garden. It is a showy plant that will flower from summer right through until mid-autumn and due to the rich nectar the flowers are a firm favourite with butterflies and birds. Phlox paniculata grows in an upright clump and then the flower stems stand proud of the foliage at around 60-90cm.
Phlox prefers full sun to very light shade and enjoy soil that is moderately fertile with medium moisture but it must be well-drained. Phlox is an excellent choice for the perennial border and looks particularly striking when planted en masse. Deadhead to keep a neat appearance but this will also encourage repeat flowering. Cut back stems once flowering has finished Plants are winter dormant, reappearing in spring. Plants can easily be split in either spring, late summer or early autumn. Also makes a lovely cut flower, so a perfect addition to the cutting garden.
