This statuesque perennial Salvia sometimes referred to as forsythia sage grows can grow up to 3metres but its spread is only about 1 metre wide. It is a late bloomer and flowers Autumn and often throughout the winter and into early spring for us. The flowers are a cheerful lemon colour at a time when not a lot else is flowering in the garden.
It is a Salvia that actually likes sun but also enjoys a shaded position, and will also appreciate shade in hotter areas. It is frost tender, although we have ours in some open areas and it does seem to tolerate our frosts which are few and far between these days, but if you get hard frosts then it will definitely need protection but planted in a shaded position under trees it will get all of the cover it needs.
Cut back the plant to the ground in late August and you can also prune it again around December which may help to keep it more compact. We find that we sometimes need to stake the plant until it becomes a more established clump.
