Thalictrum delavayi | Mauve
Moisture and shade are two factors to growing beautiful Thalictrum although we find that mulching is enough to keep the moisture levels up during summer. I just adore it for its floaty romantic flowers and its lovely maidenhair fern-like foliage. Its flowers are particularly longlasting and it looks wonderful as a cut flower. We grow ours with our Hostas as we like the softness of the foliage with the big broad leaves of the Hostas, have a look at our Hosta Plantiginea if this is a look that you would like to achieve.
Thalictrum is fully hardy and grows to around a metre. You can trim it back after flowering or wait until late winter/early spring although we prefer to leave it as the seed heads are attractive. You can divide your Thalictrum plant and the best time to do this is in the early spring or early autumn although it is not necessary to do this.
