Verbena rigidaRegular price $12.00 Save $-12.00
Flowering for weeks on end from summer into late autumn, this small tuberous perennial forms a bushy mound of dark green leaves that are approximately 5-10cm in length and has clusters of fragrant intense purple flowers on branched stems. A shorter cultivar of the popular taller Verbena bonariensis.
The flowers are rich in nectar and attract bumblebees, honeybees and other pollinators. A compact and reliable plant that spreads underground by rhizomes and is perennial so come back year after year. Low maintenance this plant is an excellent choice for the front of a sunny border. Whilst it is considered a tender perennial not liking frost, it can be grown as an annual in colder climates.
A recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society this little plant grows up to 60cm with an ultimate spread of up to 1m although harsher conditions will keep it in check. Performs to its best in full sun in a moist but well drained soil and is actually very drought and heat tolerant once established - mulching is recommended to protect the plant in cooler climates. A trouble free Verbena species and one that is not affected by mildew or even the hottest of climates. A perfect choice for a container as well as the garden and a very pretty addition to a cottage garden although it is a versatile plant fitting into any garden.
Excellent for both cut flowers and for drying.
We do also have the taller growing Verbena bonariensis available.
