Hard to find, the Lions Tail (or Lions Ear) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that is a native of South Africa.

Lion’s Tail is an evergreen shrub growing from 1.5 - 2 metres tall and about 1.5 metre wide. The dark green leaves are held in opposite positions on the square stem with the leaves decreasing in size from the base to the top which are aromatic when crushed. The long tubular flowers are a beautiful fuzzy bright orange and they are grouped in tiered whorls which go around the stem, rising up the plant to above the foliage in attractive clusters. Fabulous for use in floral work.

They are highly ornamental and blooms profusely in late summer or sometimes throughout the year in warmer climates. Prefers a full sun position although it will cope with some shade, but we find drainage is important as they definitely do not like wet feet. Drought tolerant once established but does prefer continued moisture so we mulch ours. Should be pruned after flowering and responds well to pruning to keep bushy and well-groomed and we are quite hard on ours. Plants do tend to yellow and drop as the weather cools down but will regrow when the weather warms up.

It can cope with temperatures to around -5 degrees celsius but in cold areas the plants should definitely be mulched to protect the crown. Loved by butterflies and bees. Fabulous in a cottage garden, coastal garden or mediterranean style garden. Can also be grown in a pot.

If you love it, don't wait as long as we do have some but not huge numbers yet!

Please note that these plants do have yellowing leaves with the cooler weather.
