Persicaria amplexicaulis | Pink
Not often seen, Persicaria bistorta sometimes listed as Bistorta aplexicaulis is a vigorous plant that has bottlebrush like spikes of tiny pink flowers that are approximately 10-12cm long that sit atop leafless stems that stand proud above the foliage throughout late spring and into early summer. Persicaria is semi-evergreen and if you cut the flowers which are also excellent for picking and drying then you may get a second flush in the autumn. A great plant for the butterfly garden. Easy and reliable over a wide range of climates.
An excellent ground cover or plant it with other spring bulbs and perennials in a partially shaded area, plants will also tolerate a sunny spot but appreciate some respite from the hot afternoon sun. This plant is also happy along the edge of streams or a pond. As mentioned previously it is vigorous and it spread but underground rhizomes so it will want some space! The dark green leaves are lance-shaped and have attractive white markings running through them that turn to red in the autumn. Cut back plants in early spring encourage strong new growth.
